Camisa supportiva / Supportive underwear

I chose this chemise, that seems sleeveless to me even if it's not really clear, as my model.

I’m very happy to show you this project I’ve been working on for more than a month!
I’ve learnt a lot about female underwear from the studies of many re-enactress: I think the interest about this topic arose after the finds in Lengberg Castle (Austria), discovered in 2008: find out more in these posts from Katafalk (with tutorial) and Isis from Medieval Silkwork.
I immediately enjoyed the idea of a supportive chemise and I decided to try to make one.  I started with reading Isis’ article about her supportive underwear: part 1part 2
In order to match as much as possible the Italian sources I had, I chose to avoid the pleated gown, since I've never seen any here.

Another example of a chemise, with sleeves and long to the ground (and even more): it's fitted in the torso, in order, probably, to  stay neatly under the overdress.

Famous italian example of sleeveless chemise, maybe made somehow "supportive" by the band or belt put under the breast.

Allacciatura sul fianco, aggiungerò
altri occhielli. / Spiral lacing. I will
have to add some more eyelets.

My smock is made with 4 panels (2 front, 2 back) and it’s fitted to the hips, then it widens with 4 gores (1 front, 1 back, 2 on sides), it’s laced on one side and it’s sleeveless.
First I followed La Cotte Simple’s tutorial to make a fitted toile with curved front seam: the “Sunday Morning Fitting Team” (featuring me and Francesco) worked hard for a couple of hours to get the toile. Then I reported the toile on paper and then to the fabric I chose: it's a very soft, old, hand-woven cotton* sheet. After I basted the pieces together, a second fitting was required: it's important to have a patient helper at this point as well, because it's almost impossible to do it by yourself. After the last adjustments, the long sewing part begun: I used backstitching for the main seams, external stitches for the gores and hem stitching to refine all the seams, since the fabric was fraying a lot. Before I finished the open side, I attached 2 stripes made with sturdy linen in order to strenghten the part of the fabric where the tension of the lacing would have been higher. Finally, I made really small eyelets with silk, following these instructions to place them, and I made a 2 fingerloop braided cord in silk.

And here's the chemise. The marble was too cold, don't laugh too much at me! ;)

La stoffa: vecchio cotone tessuto a mano.
/ The fabric: old hand-woven cotton.
* Searching some more information about it, I found some articles about cotton's diffusion in Italy during XIII-XIV century, not only as a fiber but also as a fabric: it seems it was used for the underwear of the low-middle class and for household linen. I promise I will make a post about it!
