Uno chaperon per domarli tutti / One chaperon to rule them all

With the new season approaching, Francesco absolutley needed a new headwear. I chose to make a chaperon, very common in Italy in second half of the XIV century.
I adapted the very useful tutorial by Katafalk to Francesco's measures (to wear it on the head the opening of the hood must match the cirumference of the head). I made the chaperon with red wool and lined it with grey wool: a lining in a different colour is not always present, but it can be seen here and there.

It's hand-sewn with red and white linen thread, the gores are sewn from the right side as usual and the result is really neat. I had some problems when turning the shell fabric in the buttonhole side: I manage to fix it somehow, but next time I'll pay more attention to this step. The buttons are 12 and I made the buttonholes in red silk using the "box-shape" tutorial from La Cotte Simple. The liripipe is 80 cm long, according to the fashion of the time and also to the findings from Greenland. Its lenght is also useful when wearing the chaperon not like a hood but on the head. I didn't make the edge with the tablet-weaving technique because I'm sure it's very well documentend in northern Europe but I don't know about any italian find with this kind of finishing: I only turned twice the edge of the shell fabric in the inside, because it's quite thin and easily frays.

And now, the funny part. Our first idea was to wear it in a couple of different ways to show it like a hood and like a proper headwear, but we found really interesting pictures and we had a lot of fun trying to re-create them: here are the results!

1. Cappuccio / Hood
Hood with a hat (tocco) and worn under the cloack: the picture is mainly to show the buttons and the lapel around the face.

2. Chaperon all'indietro / Backwards worn chaperon
The backwards worn chaperon is for sure one of the most common: I chose this picture because there are buttons, just like in our model. (and yes, because I like Altichiero da Zevio for the huge amounts of details he puts in his frescoes)

3.  Cappuccio sulle spalle con cappello / Hood over the shoulders with hat

In this case the hood is over the shoulders, some buttonholes are visible in the front. This hood is quite wide over the shoulders, maybe his liripipe is shorter as the one of the shepherd in the background.

4. Chaperon all'indietro con liripipium / Backwards worn chaperon with liripipe
The special feature of this style is the liripipe turned around the head.

5. Chaperon con pieghe girate in avanti / Chaperon with frontward folds
I immediately liked this weird way of wearing the chaperon, with the buttons on the forehead and the fabric curled in the front and kept in place with a knot of the liripipe.

I've seen many strange reproductions of this headwear, but I believe it can be made folding neatly the chaperon and keeping it in place with the liripipe or the fold that's usually made around the face, in case the "tail" is too short.

Two similar solutions, with the fabric more or less folded.

Alcune osservazioni in conclusione: / Conclusions:
*Taking the pictures, we realized that some of the styles we tried to recreate would have looked better with a chaperon with smaller shoulders (about 10 cm less): with this chaperon some styles were impossible to recreate.

  3. I really like the way you show the alternative ways of wearing a hood. I sometimes wear my hood upside down, but this gives me some more ideas!
